This volume provides an indepth background on the land and people of the area (from a Belgian perspective) and then discusses in great detail (and with many photos) the construction and use of the Boma tramway, le Chemin de Fer du Congo, le Chemin de Fer du Congo Superieur aux Grands Lacs Africains, le Chemin de Fer au Katanga, and other lines into the interior. The colonial administration kept detailed records and these have been accessed to provide the information that is the backbone of this book. Illustrated with over 1000 black and white photos. With numerous maps, gradient profiles. Includes bibliography and decorative end papers.
