One of the most intriguing characters introduced by Neil Gaiman in his landmark Sandman series was Lucifer—the most beautiful of all the angels, the Morningstar and the Prince of Hell. He gave up his wings and his God–given powers and walked away from the Underworld. Now, he owns an exclusive nightclub in Los Angeles. Cute, huh?

In this ongoing series from writer Mike Carey (Petrefax), Lucifer is ready to get back into the game of being… well… bad and divine. And so begins the pursuit of both his wings and his powers; however, not everyone wants Lucifer to return to his former state of being. And therein lies the conflict at the heart of this well–written monthly; Carey leads the Morningstar to such exotic locales as the House of Windowless rooms, where he encounters Izanami, the Queen of Death who’s looking to take out our anti-hero.

While it’s hard to equal Sandman, Carey proves that he’s more than capable of playing in Gaiman’s sandbox. This series is a worthy successor to Gaiman’s seminal work.
