AUTHOR/CARTOGRAPHER: Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 and 1775, he succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin and Giovanni Rizzi-Zannoni as cartographer to the King of France at the Hydrographic Service of the Navy (the Depot of Maps and Plans of the Navy was created by order of King Louis XV in 1720). Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne's work represented an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain, Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin; however, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as elaborate cartouches and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal.

AUTHOR/CARTOGRAPHER: Nicolas Desmarest (1725-1815) was a French geologist and contributor to the Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, in particular, the multi-volume Géographie-physique. He utilized his journeys, travelling on foot, so as to add to his knowledge of the Earth's structure, in 1788 he was appointed inspector general of manufactures in France.
