Description

Very unique set of three identity cards of jewish officer Ely N. Bergmann (dated 1944, and 2x 1945). He was with the Office of War Information and sent coded messages to the (Dutch) resistance from London. See his obituary below. His original Office of War Information pass is also included! Look up his name on the internet; there’s plenty to be found about him. The set consists of his Navy ID card, his Army ID card, and his Office of War Information card, all three with photos. A rather unique grouping!

Ely I. Bergmann, aged 86, born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on January 10, 1918, passed away on September 27, 2004. He volunteered for service in World War II and served as a Psychological Warfare Agent with the Office of War Information (O.W.I.), sending coded messages to the Resistance in Occupied Europe via a secret radio station in London's Soho district, located in the Gaumont Theater. Another experience involved Dr. Walter Rosson, a San Antonio native and former board member of the Northeast Independent School District. Dr. Rosson received a weekend pass to visit Dad in London, where they both went through a bombing raid with flak firing near the hotel. Upon returning to his base, Dr. Rosson found out that his B-24 and its crew had been shot down over Germany during a bombing mission, and no crew members survived.

After World War II, he married Eleanor Lifshutz and relocated to San Antonio, where he led a colorful and productive life that included community service with the Lion's Club, C.A.R.E., the Police Civil Service Commission, D.L.I. at Lackland as a Sponsor, the Civil Air Patrol, and the foreign affairs section of the Chamber of Commerce. This led to his appointment as Vice Consul to Panama and later as Consul General to El Salvador with diplomatic credentials. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends and family, and outings with relatives. He was generous and always found time for others. He read and discussed history and foreign affairs and later talked about his experiences in London during World War II, especially the resilience of the British under attacks from bombs, V1 and V2 rockets, and anti-aircraft batteries in Hyde Park, compared to his last visit there in the 1980s. Ever the optimist, he will be missed."
